ScriptableObjects aren't going to get you there by themselves though; and a lot of stuff in the UnityEngine namespace won't serialize straight-away. It sounds like you want to use your own data classes with custom inspectors that can read/write to files on the disk. You don't need a wrapper as that just wraps around the SO before writing to disk and it, again, cannot be written to disk. Instead, create a SaveGameItem class that is serializable. Give it a copy constructor that reads in your SO. Then do something like: WebDescription. Writes all unsaved asset changes to disk. Identical to EditorApplication.SaveAssets except not permitted to be called during serialization. When calling this function, AssetModificationProcessor.OnWillSaveAssets will be invoked, allowing you to override which files are saved to disk.
