WebDec 29, 2024 · Abstract Since the 1990s, Schmidt's noticing hypothesis has been viewed as one of the most influential theoretical underpinnings in the SLA field for its contribution to the centralization of the roles of both attention and awareness (consciousness) in the L2 learning process. Webnoticing, Schmidt was equivocal on this point; he appeared to favor the view that noticing is necessary for learning but left open the possibility that it is simply facilitative. Schmidt has always closely associated attention with noticing, and his more recent article on this topic (Schmidt, 2001) focused on atten-tion rather than consciousness.
