Even if this automatic system doesn’t catch your unreported 1099 income, the IRS can always go back and check it by hand. A common misconception is that, if you don’t hear from the IRS within a reasonable amount of time after filing — say, a few months — you’re in the clear. You can easily fall prey to an employment audit with your children if they act, look, and smell like an employee, but you ‘call’ them a sub-contractor. Be careful.
